Bronzeville Green Youth Initiative
Collective Learning Lab designed an initiative for Quad Communities Development Corporation (QCDC) to teach local youth about the effects of littering on community development and local ecology. We created curriculum for 7th grade Bronzeville Classical School, 12th grade King College Prep, and 3rd grade Jackie Robinson Elementary School students highlighting the emotional, economic, and ecological benefits of reducing litter in Bronzeville and its business corridor.
We partnered with the Field Museum to allow students to observe and touch real local wildlife and to learn about our plant and animal neighbors. Students experienced workshops on decomposition and the problem of litter entering our waterways. Students gained insight and ideas from the interactive classroom workshops and lessons grounded in experiential learning, and were able to incorporate them into the designs of a poster campaign discouraging littering. The initiative culminated in a “Day of Action” where students created street art by the school in the spirit of playscape learning and picked up litter around the neighborhood.
The posters were displayed in local businesses raising awareness about eco friendly materials, best recycling practices, and mobilizing youth and community members toward environmental stewardship.
