Students win Project Windows 2024 Georgia O’Keeffe: “My New Yorks”
Project Windows is a window display contest created by The Art Institute of Chicago to promote their upcoming exhibits. In 2024 Georgia O’Keeffe: “My New Yorks” was the inspiration for contest designs.
For the first time in Project Windows history, Collective Learning Lab created a pathway for students in Chicago Public Schools to participate. Bronzeville Classical School’s 5th and 7th grade art classes created window displays for two local businesses in Bronzeville, Chicago. In order to learn a shared language based in art critique, they explored shape, light, texture and what story the art was telling. Students looked at work by Georgia O’Keeffe to explore their artistic and critical understanding and to create ties to what they might want their own art to be. They also heard from the businesses and learned why this partnership is important to them. The businesses thought it important to showcase the work of the local students and were excited about the community building this kind of partnering promotes.
The work was installed in the business windows and the students, their families, and neighbors are invited to visit the businesses and vote on the window displays to show support. By connecting youth to small local businesses, we are showing students the direct correlation to their part in business development through art.
